AUGUSTA – Lt. Col. John F. Joy (retired) died Oct. 15, at MaineGeneral Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 7, 1930, in Lewiston, the son of Edwin J. and Bertha Linn Joy. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1949.
He enlisted in the Maine Army National Guard on March 2, 1948, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel on Feb. 28, 1986. He worked at Camp Keyes in Augusta from 1965 until retiring from his state of Maine position there in 1990.
He was an Eagle Scout and in the late 1950s, he worked for two years as a district executive for the Boy Scouts of America, Pine Tree Council, Abenaki District. He also did TV and radio repair, owned and operated Joy Electronics and at one time worked as manager of the service department for Sears Roebuck in Lewiston.
He and his family moved to Augusta in the fall of 1967. He was a member of the Green Street United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the Kennebec Historical Society and served the organization as treasurer for several years. He was a life member of Maine Historical Society, the New England Historic Genealogical Society, the National Genealogical Society, Maine Old Cemeteries Association, Piscataqua Pioneers, the Chadbourne Family Association, the Military Order of the World Wars, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion and was a lifetime charter member of the National World War II Memorial.
Survivors include Sally Rowe Joy, his wife of 44 years; a son, Scott and his wife, Judith, of Stratham, N.H.; a daughter, Joan and her husband, Bruce Tibbetts, of St. Albans; six grandchildren; a sister, Isla Morton of Casper, Wyo., and her husband, Gerald; and many nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Linn E. Joy of Monroe, N.C.
