AUBURN – Carl W. Ellis Sr., 86, of Piscataquis Street in Rumford, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Hospice House, after a long illness.

He was born in Rumford on March 17, 1921, a son of Arthur J. and Ella (Hanson) Ellis. He was educated in Rumford schools. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was employed for 36 years with Boise Cascade Paper Co. He was a member of MARS Affiliate and a ham operator with the call letters KIUNQ. He received his pilot’s license at the age of 17, and he enjoyed reading, fishing, photography and playing his guitar.

He was lovingly devoted to his wife Betty, and his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Elizabeth Ellis of Rumford; a daughter, Elizabeth Svec and husband, Randy, of Turner; a son, Carl Ellis Jr., and wife, Sonjia, of Rumford; a sister, Ruth Reinhart of Kentucky; five grandchildren, Susan Svec of Ohio, Jessica Svec of Florida, Christine Reynolds of Lewiston, Diane Ellis of Mexico and Heather Cunningham of Mexico; four great-grandchildren, Cortney Reynolds of California, Kai Stevens of Ohio, Kirk Stevens of Ohio, and Kane Stevens of Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and three brothers, Cliff Ellis, Ronald Ellis and Harry Ellis.
