NEW VINEYARD – A one-car crash claimed the life of a Dover-Foxcroft man and injured two passengers early Wednesday on Route 27 after the vehicle struck a pole, overturned and burst into flames, police said.

State police say alcohol and speed caused the crash that occurred about 1:45 a.m., Maine Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a press release.

A passenger in the car, Terry Richardson Jr., 34, of Dover-Foxcroft, died at the scene, McCausland stated.

The driver and another passenger were seriously injured, according to Trooper Joshua Birmingham, McCausland said.

Driver Ryan Hurd, 22, of Lincoln was listed in stable condition late Wednesday morning at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, a spokeswoman there said Wednesday.

A second passenger, Chad Bernier, 30, of Medway, was listed in fair condition after he was taken by medical helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, a hospital spokeswoman said.

No charges were immediately lodged against Hurd, because investigators will await blood-alcohol tests and consult with the District Attorney’s Office, McCausland stated in the news release.
