FARMINGTON – The oldest citizen of Weld, and the holder of the Boston Post Cane, since, Dec. 20, 1996, Dorothy S. Winter, 105, passed away at the Sandy River Center for Healthcare and Rehabilitation, on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
She was born Nov. 7, 1901, in Weld, the daughter of Henry and Nina (Phillips) Swett.
She graduated from Weld High School, attended Farmington Normal School and taught school in Dickvale (West Peru) and Dixfield for one year.
On Feb. 5, 1924, she married Leon A. Winter Sr. He died March 20, 1956.
She was postal clerk of Weld for many years and was the Weld librarian for 16 years.
She was a devoted member of the Weld Congregational Church, having served the church as Sunday School superintendant, teacher and active member of the Ladies Aid. She was a life-member of the Weld Extension Homemakers, The American Legion Auxiliary Post 203, The Weld Historical Society (of which she was a charter member), and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 171, Weld. She was also a member of the Weld Village Improvement Society and the Rural Mail Carriers Auxiliary.
She was a caregiver for many years. She was an inspiration to her family and many friends. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren deeply and was blessed to have attended each of her children’s 50th wedding anniversary celebrations.
She leaves her three children, son, Leon Almon Winter Jr.; two daughters, June Vining and her husband, Hiram and Romaine Hutchinson and her husband, Edmund, all of Weld; seven grandchildren, Fawn Winter Hermon of Cumberland, Martha Winter Vining of Readfield, Stephen Vining of Weld, Kenneth Vining of Farmington, Glenn Hutchinson of Oakland, Kim Hutchinson of Dixfield and Trent Hutchinson of Pownal; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband; a sister, Katherine Conant; and a daughter-in-law, Pauline Winter.
