AUBURN – Lewis D. Barnett, 75, of South Rumford Road, Rumford, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, after a six-month battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family at his side while at the Hospice House.

He was born Nov. 5, 1931, in Upton, the son of William and Eleanor (McLeod) Barnett. He graduated from Rumford High School, Class of 1950. While in high school, he worked as a chauffeur for two years for Dr. Eugene McCarty.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army, where he fought in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. After his honorable discharge in the service, he started employment at Oxford Paper Co. from 1955 until his retirement in 1994. He also worked part time for Ed Stanley’s Furniture Store for 25 years.

He enjoyed family gatherings, his rose garden, and mowing lawns on his John Deere tractor.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gloria (Viger) Barnett; his two sons, Dean Barnett and wife, Chris, James Barnett and wife, Janet, one daughter, Tammy Gallant and husband Larry, all of Rumford; one sister, Viola (Barnett) Johnson of Mercer; five grandchildren, Katie Averill, Nicole, Jamie and Deanna Barnett and Makenzie Gallant; and one great-grandchild, Brooklyn Averill.

He was predeceased by his parents; four sisters, Etta Purple, Annie Rosenberg, Bessay Holman and Isabelle Young; and one brother, Clayton Barnett.

The family wishes to thank all of the Hospice care workers and family members for their support.
