RANGELEY – Firefighters were able to save a house early Thursday on Blanchard Road, but a two-bay garage with a workshop were destroyed, fire Chief Rudy Davis said.
The fire, reported at 3:03 a.m., started in the workshop area but Davis said he’s not sure what caused it.
Senior citizens William and Jamesina Pierce, owners of the residence off Mingo Loop, had awoken and one reported the fire, he said.
The fire was well under way when firefighters arrived, he said. They worked to protect the house, which was 20 feet away.
The siding on the house was steaming and the fire was burning close to the building, he said.
Besides the garage structure there was a fair amount of personal effects that were lost, Davis said.
“They’re grateful and we are grateful that is all that they lost; it could have been much worse,” Davis said. “As a fire goes, it was pretty good. We saved the house. The garage was pretty much gone when we arrived.”
About a dozen firefighters from Rangeley and Eustis along with five trucks worked the scene.
No one was injured and the couple is insured, Davis said.
