The Lewiston Maineiacs’ return to the Habitibi-Temiscamingue region of Western Quebec was nearly as nice as their last voyage there.

This time, there was no hardware at stake, though, and this time, the Maineiacs couldn’t earn a win in each game.

Brad Marchand popped in the winning goal with 59 seconds to play in overtime to lift Val d’Or to a 3-2 win over the visiting Maineiacs in front of 1,798 at the Air Creebec Centre on Sunday.

Though the Maineiacs earned three points out of a possible four on their brief, two-game swing through the region, the overtime loss ends the team’s seven-game win streak.

The last time Lewiston had played at the Air Creebec Centre, the Maineiacs carried the President’s Cup trophy off the ice in front of some disgruntled home fans. They’d won that series in just four games, and a series against neighboring Rouyn-Noranda, also in just four games.

“That was a good thing in this game,” Maineiacs’ head coach Ed Harding said. “But I’m still concerned about playing a full 60 minutes. We’re not going to be a good, playoff-ready hockey team until we learn to do that.”

As has been their wont all season, Lewiston fired out of the gate, rocketing out to a 2-0 lead after one period on goals from Jakub Bundil and Danick Paquette.

The now-traditional second-period lull set in during the middle frame. Lewiston managed just four shots on Val d’Or keeper Rafael D’Orso, and while the Maineiacs allowed only eight to reach Peter Delmas, one of them slid by the 17-year-old goalie and cut Lewiston’s lead in half.

“We didn’t play a smart period,” Harding said. “Even now, in the NHL even, the old two-goal lead is ominous. Our shifts were too long and we weren’t getting the puck deep.”

Val d’Or took advantage of a slip-up early in the third to even the score, and despite a flurry of shots from Lewiston later in the period, the Foreurs forced overtime.

“We did a better job in the third,” Harding said, “but our shifts were still too long.”

Then, with 59 seconds to play, Marchand collected his third point of the night to send the teams off to the showers.

“He came right down the ice on a partial odd-man break and scored,” Harding said. “We had a couple of chances ourselves (in overtime), but couldn’t convert on them.”

Lewiston next skates at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, when the Maineiacs will square off against the Saint John Sea Dogs.
