RUMFORD – Selectmen appointed one of their own and two residents to sit on the Regional Planning Committee, which will soon begin planning a possible school consolidation.
Selectman Frank DiConzo was appointed to represent the municipality. He is a former SAD 43 board member. Jolan Ippolito and Len Greaney were appointed as resident representatives.
Ippolito is the town’s current Finance Committee chairman and the former co-chairman of the committee that worked out the merger of SAD 43 and the Rumford School Department in the 1980s.
Greaney is a member of several municipal committees and a former candidate for a state senatorial seat.
Board Chairman Greg Buccina, although not officially a member, said he plans to attend most meetings of the Regional Planning Committee.
“I want to make sure our voices are heard,” he said, citing the more than half-million additional dollars the town may be responsible for if the consolidation of SAD 43, SAD 44, SAD 21, and Union 37 is enacted.
The two citizen representatives were directed to contact SAD 43 Superintendent Jim Hodgkin to discuss the upcoming regional planning meetings.
Hodgkin, and superintendents of the three other area districts, will meet Tuesday to discuss the regional planning committee and to set a date for a first meeting.
According to state law, at least a partial plan for administrative consolidation must be submitted by Dec. 1.
Mexico plans to appoint its municipal and citizen representatives on Wednesday. Dixfield has appointed selectmen’s Chairwoman Bettina Martin and will soon appoint a resident.
SAD 43 has appointed two of the four representatives it is entitled to; SAD 21 and SAD 44 are expected to make their appointments on Monday. Union 37 has already appointed all municipal, school board and resident members.
