LIVERMORE FALLS – The regional school planning committee voted unanimously Monday to have 10 people on a new school board to oversee a Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls consolidated school system if voters in the three towns agree to form one next year.
The decision was based on the federal law of one person, one vote.
Committee members reviewed several options of voting methods outlined by both Jay and SAD 36 school superintendents, Robert Wall and Terry Despres, respectively, and discussed by committee members.
Among those options were sub district representation, weighted votes, a seven-member board, a nine-member board and a 10-member board.
The latter board configuration, which several members said would be the easiest one to understand, was suggested by SAD 36 Chairman Ashley O’Brien, who is co-chairing the planning committee with Jay School Committee Chairwoman Mary Redmond-Luce.
The voting method chosen was based on town populations.
According to Wall, the 2000 census figures adjusted to 2005, Jay has 4,857 residents, Livermore has 2,202 residents and Livermore Falls has 3,235 residents.
Under the 10-member board, Jay would have five representatives on the board, Livermore would have two and Livermore Falls would have three.
Those representatives would be chosen by voters during an election.
At the panel’s next meeting at 4:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 29, at the Jay Middle School, the subject will be indebtedness, assets and ownership of school buildings and property.
