BOURNE, Mass. (AP) – The state fire marshal says a five-alarm blaze that destroyed a landmark Cape Cod restaurant was caused by an electrical problem.

The fire at the Mezza Luna in the Buzzards Bay section of Bourne started at about 4:30 Saturday afternoon when about 30 customers were still inside.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan says the flames began when a wall socket behind the bar overheated. The fire traveled through the walls and erupted into the attic.

The damage is estimated at $1.5 million.

There were no reports of injuries to customers or staff, but several firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Fire departments from several towns battled the blaze.

The Italian restaurant has been owned by the Cubellis family since 1937.
