A former Monmouth Academy teacher indicted earlier this month on charges of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student was arrested early Tuesday morning after police say they found him with the girl – a violation of his bail conditions.
Christopher Dumaine, 39, of Readfield has been accused of having a sexual relationship with a female student between June and September. Two weeks ago, he was indicted on two charges of gross sexual assault and two charges of unlawful sexual contact. He pleaded not guilty and was released on $5,000 bail. As part of that bail, he was prohibited from having any contact with the girl.
“We thought perhaps we should verify he’s complying with the conditions,” Kennebec District Attorney Evert Fowle said.
Fowle asked the Maine State Police to watch Dumaine’s home. He said they caught him and the girl together at 4 a.m. Tuesday, the first day of the stakeout.
In his motion to revoke Dumaine’s bail, Fowle said a state police detective saw Dumaine leave his Readfield home in the middle of the night and return a little while later, apparently with the girl.
The detective said he later watched Dumaine and the girl leave the house and drive toward her home.
Police said they stopped Dumaine’s car as he drove on the private road that led to the girl’s home. The girl was with him.
When police talked to her later, the girl told them “she did not want to say anything that would get the defendant in trouble,” according to the motion.
Dumaine was charged with violating his bail conditions and put in jail.
Fowle is asking the court to revoke Dumaine’s bail, a move that would keep him in jail.
“It’s very troubling that a teacher, an educated person, who clearly understood he was not supposed to engage in this conduct, would anyway,” Fowle said.
Dumaine was a longtime English teacher at Monmouth Academy. He abruptly resigned this fall, about a month before his indictment.
