RUMFORD – Ignite, a student-led organization, was recognized by the American Lung Association at Mountain Valley High School in front of the whole school body. Students Thomas Williams, Abigail Bronish, Laura Murphy and Megan Arsenault were presented the 2007 Youth Advocacy Award for their work with policy change.

Williams said, “Maine has done very well to focus on the youth. The state has given its youth protection in many ways; I am glad that Ignite could help.” The group of students worked with the Maine Coalition on Smoking or Health on LD 1361; the ban of flavored cigarettes in Maine.

“Maine is the leader in tobacco control, making an example to the rest of the nation. We have come so far, there is no turning back.” Williams, executive director of Ignite Oxford County, leads a team of high school students dedicated to making change in the state.

To describe how the group felt, Williams use a George Bernard Shaw quote, “Some look at thing that are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not.” Ignite students look at this quote and know they are making change today – all day – everyday.

Ignite is a grassroots organization empowering youth to hold the tobacco industry accountable by directing public officials to act responsibly.
