LIVERMORE – Town officials have established an alternate route when North Turkey Lane closes Wednesday for two weeks to undergo reconstruction.

Workers from C.H. Stevenson Inc. of Wayne plan to remove two large old culverts Oct. 31, selectboard Administrative Assistant Kurt Schaub said Monday.

Ford Brook has flooded the area many times when the culverts in place have not been able to handle the flow of water.

A single pipe-arched culvert will be installed, and the road will be elevated about 3 feet, Schaub said.

Turkey Lane will be closed about two-tenths of a mile south of the Route 108 intersection.

The temporary detour for motorists is to use the discontinued portion of Turkey Lane, which is about of a mile long to South Turkey Lane near the intersection of Pike Road to reconnect to Route 108.

“We’re urging residents to please be patient and use both caution and courtesy while using the detour,” Schaub said.

The discontinued portion of the road is narrow, he added.

Stevenson Inc., the low bidder, was awarded the contract for the project from among nine bids.

The bids ranged from $137,777 to $246,638 from a Turner company, Schaub said.

The town was awarded a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency of $105,621 for the project. The town’s matching portion is $35,207.

The project was initially estimated to cost about $140,000 two years ago, Schaub said.

It is now expected to cost about $149,000.

Town officials will go back to FEMA to see if they would fund the difference in the project cost. Otherwise the town will have to use money from the town’s capital road highway capital improvement account.
