GREENBURGH, N.Y. (AP) – Two suspected shoplifters abandoned a baby boy at a discount store when approached by a security guard, police said Monday.

“They pushed the baby carriage toward the security guard and fled,” Greenburgh police Lt. Chris McNerney said a day after the incident at a T.J. Maxx store. Police lost sight of the women as they ran through the lot, he said.

One of the women, a Bronx resident, left behind identifying information, but police said they have not been able to locate her or her companion.

A man claiming to be the baby’s father showed up at police headquarters Sunday night with a birth certificate, but police said the baby will remain in the custody of child protective services until authorities can confirm the man’s relationship to the child.

and ensure the boy’s well-being.

The man told police that one of the women called and told him to pick up the child. The man said he didn’t know the women’s whereabouts, police said.
