LEWISTON – The Stanton Bird Club is offering the fourth trip in the free Guided Bird Walk Series. On Wednesday, Nov. 7, leaders Stan and Joan DeOrsey will take participants along the trails of Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary on Montello Street.
The birds expected to be seen at this time of year in the mixed woods habitats of the sanctuary are downy and hairy woodpeckers, and possibly the resident pileated woodpecker. The chickadee, titmouse and nuthatch will stay here for the winter and can be easily found.
With luck, the less common species such as ruby-crowned kinglet, golden-crowned kinglet, yellow-rumped warbler and purple finch are possible. Finally, there are two birds of prey that live at Thorncrag and can be seen – sharp-shinned hawk and barred owl.
Thorncrag naturalist Susan Hayward will co-lead the trip to provide information about the historical features of the sanctuary and natural history wonders to be discovered in the forest in late fall, such as identifying trees by examining the twig buds.
Those interested should meet at Staples parking lot at 855 Lisbon St. The group will leave Staples at 8 a.m. to be at the walk site at 8:20. Walks end by 11, but those wishing may leave early.
If it is raining or snowing at 7 a.m. and is predicted to continue through 10 a.m., the walk will be canceled. Bring binoculars and dress for the weather. Walks are approximately two miles on an even and basically dry surface. Call Stan or Joan DeOrsey at 933-2266 or e-mail [email protected] with questions.
