FARMINGTON – “Free tacos! Free tacos!”

That was the chant at Taco Bell on Tuesday afternoon from a small group of devoted Red Sox fans from Rangeley.

The students drove to Farmington as soon as school let out – for the free tacos, but mostly in support of their favorite team.

They had encouraged everyone in the Rangeley area to take part, they said, and counted a total of 10 Rangeley students.

Wearing a sombrero, sophomore Devon Fay and schoolmates Allie Hammond, Taylor Gillman, Krista Jamison and Devon Sargent created their own festive celebration as they cheered for the Red Sox and for tacos.

Silly String decorated their vehicle with “Taco Fest 2007” and “Jacoby Ellsbury” written on the windows. Ellsbury, the Red Sox rookie who won every American a free taco from Taco Bell by stealing a base in the World Series, was described by the Rangeley girls as “a looker.”

They came to represent “their team” and brought their enthusiasm out to the busy Routes 2 and 4 highway as they hollered, prayed Silly String and tooted an air horn at motorists. Many tooted back.

It was an early bedtime for Jamison on Monday after watching the four night games of the World Series, she said, but she wouldn’t have missed them.

“I’ve been following them since Day 1,” she said. “My parents gave me a passion for the Red Sox since I was born.”

The turnout at F armington’s Taco Bell was steady as the afternoon wore on, Manager BJ Tracy said. She said the company had offered the special to help it reconnect with younger customers and that appears to be what happened at the Farmington fast-food stop.
