LEWISTON – Two unopposed candidates in the city’s upcoming election – Ward 7’s Robert Reed and Mayor Larry Gilbert – are among the top three in contributions, according to the City Clerk’s Office.
Gilbert has taken in $1,390 in his race for a full two-year term as mayor, according to pre-election spending reports filed with the clerk’s office Wednesday afternoon. Ward 7’s Reed has taken in $1,100 in donations.
Only Ward 1’s Stavros Mendros – hoping to reclaim his council seat – took in more money. Mendros brought in $1,935 in contributions, including $435 in in-kind donations for signs and equipment from his business, Olympic Consulting.
Mendros’ opponent, attorney Thomas Peters II, claimed $410 in campaign spending contributions – including $210 of his own money.
City Clerk Kathy Montejo said the reports represent all campaign spending through Oct. 25. Candidates must file their final campaign spending reports by Dec. 18.
Candidates for the seven open City Council seats, the mayor’s chair and the eight school committee seats have spent a total of $8,180 so far in the 2007 election.
Ward 4’s Douglas Foss was the top spender, according to the filings. Foss, in a three-way race with Joseph Roy and Nelson Peters, spent $841.09 for campaign signs. Roy spent $638.01 – $333 on printing, $189 for Sun Journal advertisements and $115 for office supplies. Peters did not claim any campaign spending.
Denis Theriault, hoping to unseat incumbent Ward 4 Councilor Ron Jean, spent $775.78 on his campaign – $421 for campaign literature and $354 for a Sun Journal ad.
Jean has spent $823 – $560 for printing, $192 for an advertisement in the Twin City Times and $71 at Sears.
Outgoing Councilor Normand Rousseau is the big contributor, however. He donated $200 apiece to the campaigns for Ward 1’s Peters, Ward 2’s Nelson Peters, Ward 4’s Denis Theriault and Ward 6’s Harry Milliken.
In the race to fill the city’s School Committee Ward 2, Larry Lachance took in $319.38 in donations but listed no spending for that money. His opponent, Paul St. Pierre, claimed no spending or donations.
All the other school committee candidates, running unopposed for their seats, claimed no spending or campaign contributions.
Two council candidates and two school committee candidates failed to get their information to Montejo’s office in time. She said those four – Ward 3 Council candidates David Vincent and Larry Poulin, at-large School Committee candidate Leah Poulin and Ward 2 School Committee candidate Paul St. Pierre – have until Monday to file the reports. Montejo must report them to the State Ethics Commission if she does not have the reports by then.
