MADAWASKA – The Rev. Romeo A. St. Pierre, 80, of Caribou, died Nov. 1, in Madawaska after a long period of declining health.
He was born in Lewiston Sept. 15, 1927, the son of Alfred and Rose (Thibeault) St. Pierre. He attended St. Charles Seminary in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and received his philosophy and theology degrees from St. Paul’s Seminary in Ottawa. He was ordained June 12, 1954, at the Portland Cathedral by the Most Rev. Daniel J. Feeney.
In 1954, he was assigned as associate pastor of St. John the Baptist Church, Winslow. He then served as chaplain to St. Ann’s Mission Indian Island, Old Town, pastor of St. Joseph’s, Farmington and pastor of Holy Rosary in Caribou, where he was instrumental in building the parish center and the New Holy Rosary Cemetery.
He also served as temporary administrator at Sacred Heart in North Caribou and auxiliary chaplain at Loring Air Force Base. He retired in 1989, but remained very active in the church and his community. He served as faithful friar of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in Waterville and Old Town and chaplain of the Fred V. Brescia Council 1870 Knights of Columbus in Caribou. He also served as vicar forane for the Eastern Aroostook Deanery for many years and state friar, Maine District James Healy 4th Degree K of C. He was a member of Catholic Golden Age, Catholic Order of Foresters, the Caribou Rotary Club and was an avid supporter of Maine Public Broadcasting.
He is survived by two sisters, Gabrielle Bouchard of Auburn and Pauline Allard of Lewiston; and several nieces and nephews.
