There are union folks opposed to the sale of Verizon to FairPoint, but the fight is not about the unions. It is about a group of well-trained workers who see the sale as a negative for everyone and should not be allowed.

Sure, the workers are union and fighting for their jobs, but as professionals, they also have much better insight into the workings of their work. Who better understands the ins-and-outs of a company than its long-term employees?

All they have said is FairPoint cannot do the same job or better with the resources they have. The unions said nothing about the sales to BellAtlantic, then to Nynex. Why?

It shouldn’t matter if the workers are non-union or union. They see loss of jobs and want to prevent it. Wouldn’t anyone try to protect his or her own job, livelihood, trade or profession if they were threatened? Our jobs are who and what we are, and sometimes need to be fought for.

Perhaps there is a news story that needs to be told here. Someone should sit down and actually hear the workers’ side of the story. Has anyone said “no” to any other sale? Why not?

One more point, are the larger, local businesses swapping to FairPoint, or staying with Verizon? I wonder why they wouldn’t if FairPoint is so great.
