BANGOR, Maine (AP) – The Maine Department of Corrections says there were no violations of procedure at the Penobscot County Jail when a murder suspect hanged herself.

Sheriff Glenn Ross released the results of the investigation that followed the death of Michelle Mills of Southwest Harbor, who was found dead on Sept. 12.

Mills was accused of bludgeoning retired college professor Jacqueline Evans with a ceramic gargoyle in January 2006. Mills had been hired to care for the ailing 83-year-old woman, who was found severely injured in her oceanfront cottage and died two days later.

The suicide was the fourth at the jail since 2002, and Mills was the first woman to take her life there. She was awaiting trial in Hancock County.
