CASTINE – State Police said speed and alcohol were the cause of a one-car crash Sunday night that claimed the life of 18-year-old Brett Gould of Carrabassett Valley.

Gould was a student at Maine Maritime Academy.

Gould’s family had only recently moved to Carrabassett Valley, area school officials at SAD 58 said. Gould’s younger brother attends Mt. Abram High School.

Two other students riding in the car Gould was driving escaped serious injury, according to a news release issued Monday by Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Troopers said Gould lost control of his 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier on Battle Avenue, about a mile from the school.

The car went out of control on a curve, overturned and came to rest on its roof in a ditch.

The two 18-year-old passengers were Brandon McAvoy of Benedicta, Maine, and Eric Ravasz of Lamont, Ill.

McAvoy escaped injury and Ravasz was treated for facial injuries and released from Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. The three were returning to the academy at the time of the 9 p.m. crash.
