KINGFIELD – Home owners here with too much junk in their yards will receive a special invitation to talk with selectmen about it.

Following an executive session with Code Enforcement Officer Doug Marble on Monday, the board decided to give the junkyard violators a final opportunity to discuss the condition of their yards before taking further action.

“There are four or five locations that the CEO and board have decided to crack down on,” said Administrative Assistant Greg Davis Wednesday. “The locations have items such as old appliances, scrap metal, huge piles of lumber and garbage that present health risks and possible rodent problems.”

The board will invite each landowner to a public meeting starting with the Nov. 19 meeting to see if there is way to resolve the junk problem, he said.

The board is hoping to avoid having the town clean the yards and bill owners for the work. If such costs are not paid, he said, a lien is attached to the property, which the town doesn’t want to do.

Kingfield has dealt with the property owners before, said Davis. Their yard conditions violate the town’s zoning ordinance, he said, which basically follows state law. By state law, two unregistered vehicles can be considered an illegal junk yard.
