PARIS – A man appeared in Oxford County Superior Court on Thursday to answer to a charge levied against him 13 years ago.

Thomas Babbitt, 61, of Route 202 in Greene, pleaded not guilty to operating after habitual offender suspension. He was indicted on the charge in August 1994 for an incident in June of that year.

According to court records, Babbitt, formerly of Otisfield, failed to appear in court for arraignment on the charge. A warrant was issued for his arrest with $500 cash or $2,500 surety bail.

In 1999, an arraignment was scheduled for the failure to appear charge. Once again, Babbitt was a no-show and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

According to his 10-year driving history, Babbitt is not a habitual offender and has no accidents or convictions aside from an improper backing violation in 2001. He also applied for an instruction permit and school bus permit in 2004, and received the permits this year.

Babbitt was arrested in Lewiston on Oct. 11 on a warrant, and later released on $500 bail.

Attempts to reach the attorney listed on Babbitt’s court records, Kelly McMorran of Lewiston, were not successful Thursday.
