LEWISTON – Norman Thompson, accused in a string of burglaries, thefts and a daylong standoff with police, is facing additional charges in Androscoggin County.

The 35-year-old man, who lives in both Mexico and Lewiston, was indicted by the Androscoggin County grand jury Thursday on charges of theft, forgery and violating conditions of release.

When he was indicted, Thompson was already jailed on separate charges from Oxford County. There, he is a suspect in several home and vehicle burglaries, as well as vehicle thefts from Oct. 6 to 11.

Thompson had been a suspect in other vehicle thefts before that arrest. In Androscoggin County on Thursday, the grand jury charged him with stealing two vehicles from Turner and Lewiston in September, and with passing bad checks the same month.

They also accused Thompson of violating terms from an earlier release from jail by committing new crimes.

Thompson has an extensive criminal history in Oxford, Franklin and Androscoggin counties, mostly for burglaries and thefts.

He was released from the Androscoggin County Jail on Oct. 5, two days after a Sun Journal photographer helped Lewiston police apprehend him. Dramatic photos that Russ Dillingham took of Thompson as he attempted to elude police gained national attention.

Thompson was arrested again in connection with that incident but was freed from jail days later. Then, on Oct. 11, he was arrested one more time after a 14-hour standoff with police at his mother’s home on Oxford Street in Mexico.

Since that standoff, he has been held without bail at the Oxford County Jail.
