NORWAY – Students from the Oxford Hills Technical High School, dressed in hats, scarves and jackets, spent an hour at the vacant Danforth Street house next to Town Hall Thursday morning measuring and evaluating it for municipal use.
Teacher John Bell said the students will present seven scenarios to selectmen at their meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Town Hall.
The town acquired the house from Herbert Roberts, who died last May. Town officials, including Police Chief Robert Federico, have been looking at options for using the property.
“Last year Chief Rob Federico approached our program to seek ideas for using this space,” Bell explained. “One of the students drafted a building to be built on the site of the former residence. The town was very pleased with the work done, but Chief Federico decided that it would be preferable to have any additions to the police station attached to the existing municipal complex. He approached me this fall with an idea to add an addition to the municipal building around the west and south sides of the southwest corner (around both sides of the tower).”
Bell said his second-year students visited the Town Hall and its grounds and were encouraged to explore all options for opening up space for the Police Department.
The result, he said, was five options shown to Federico, Town Manager David Holt, building inspector Jeff Van Decker and Recreation Director Deb Partridge last week in a PowerPoint presentation. They included using space between the Town Hall and fire station and building additions off the back of the station.
“The purpose of the October presentation was for Chief Federico and David Holt to narrow down the alternatives to two or three which would then be presented to the selectmen,” Bell said. “After the presentation, David Holt asked that we bring all the proposals back for the selectmen’s meeting,” he added.
Additionally, he has asked for a proposal to use the Roberts residence.
On Thursday, students visited the house to take measurements and begin preparations for their presentation to selectmen.
Student Brayden Richards said the most difficult part of the process is using the new REVIL system, which takes measurements and drawings and puts them into a three dimensional diagram.
