LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Veterans Council will hold a special Veterans Day observance with color guards and a musical tribute Sunday at the Lewiston Armory.
All veterans, family and friends and the general public are invited.
The schedule of events is:
• 7-8:30 a.m.: Free breakfast for veterans and family members at the Lewiston High School cafeteria, served by Green Ladle culinary art students;
• 9:15 a.m.: Color guard groups, including military, veterans organizations, auxiliaries, fraternal, social and youth organizations from the third district will line up for pass and review;
• 10 a.m., musical tribute featuring the Just Us entertainers and the Edward Little and Lewiston high school bands playing together; (dignitaries including U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, state Sen. Peggy Rotundo and the Lewiston and Auburn mayors are expected to attend);
• 1 p.m.: A special ceremony of the unveiling of the 14th memorial veterans stone at Veterans Park. It will bring the total of veterans names listed on the memorial stones to 3,024. In case of rain, the unveiling of the stone will be held at 1 p.m. Monday.
Veterans Day, originally called Armistice Day, commemorated the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918. Fighting stopped at 11 a.m., the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Today, Veterans Day honors all, living and dead, who served with the U.S. armed forces.
