A Maine man was missing and presumed drown Saturday night after the boat he was riding in flipped over on Great Pond in Belgrade.

The man’s name was not released Saturday night because officials were still attempting to notify next of kin.

The Warden’s Service said the man, his adult son and three grandchildren were riding in a 14-foot aluminum boat Saturday morning, heading to an island, where they planned to stay at a family camp for the weekend. Along with the five people, the boat was packed with gear and food for the weekend.

“It appears they were overloaded,” said game warden Lt. Pat Dorian. “The boat swamped and they flipped over.”

The man’s adult son and grandchildren made it to shore, but the man could not be found. The three children were wearing life vests, but the adults were not, Dorian said.

The man’s adult son secured the children in their camp on the island and then went for help. By the time the dive team arrived it was mid-afternoon and they had little time to search before dark.

The team is expected to resume the search this morning.

The man’s adult son and grandchildren are from out of state. The man was from Maine, but Dorian declined to release his hometown pending family notification.
