I want to express my appreciation at the lengths members of our Rumford Board of Selectmen will go to save taxpayers some money.

Recently, two current selectmen and a former selectman cut down two maple trees from in front of the Rumford Town Office. I think this demonstrates the commitment members of the board have to reduce spending. Thank God for forward-thinking men of action, willing to give their time and service to eradicate the dangerous deciduous threat on Congress Street and open up the lovely view of the town office.

I, for one, can’t think of one reason why residents would want a project like that put out to bid and awarded to a licensed, insured professional arborist when members of the board are willing to risk personal injury and damage to personal and municipal property to save taxpayers some money.

If the Board of Selectman could be expanded, and several more committed officials elected, like the ones in office, the town could achieve some real savings.

With several more committed selectmen, the town manager and the public works department could be eliminated. The selectmen could meet, make the important decisions, and head out the next morning in a town truck to do road maintenance.

I want to express my appreciation, once again, to the committed, chainsaw-wielding selectmen who took on the tree-cutting project. And I want to express my relief that no one lost an eye.

Glenn Gordon, Rumford Point
