FARMINGTON – Substantial damage to a University of Maine at Farmington police cruiser and burglary of six cars on campus early Saturday landed a student in jail and campus police with a need to find alternate transportation.

Kevin R. Manchester, 19, of Farmington and Keene, N.H., was arrested on a charge of aggravated criminal mischief and six counts of burglary after he smashed a windshield and side mirror on a marked UMF public safety cruiser. The light bar on top was also cracked and the hood scratched, Farmington police officer Ed Hastings’ said in his report.

Hastings responded to the call from the safety office and searched the area as did a police dog who tracked Manchester and another person to a parking lot next to Old South Church on Main Street.

After questioning the two, Manchester admitted to smashing the vehicle. The second male had just met up with Manchester and was not involved, police reported.

While being booked at Franklin County Detention Center, several items were found on him from vehicles that had been burglarized that same night at the UMF Prescott Field parking lot, the police report states.

There was also a vehicle in the parking lot next to Old South that Manchester is alleged to have burglarized.

Manchester was being held at the detention center on Monday.

The UMF police officer, Adam Welch, and chief were unavailable for comment Monday, but officer John Irving said the cruiser was so badly damaged it couldn’t be used. A second department vehicle was also out of service, leaving the department with a van until after the holiday.
