LIVERMORE – Barry Peacock’s life – and his family’s – took a drastic change for the worse in October when his Jeep collided with a delivery truck on Route 4. Among his injuries: His left leg was amputated, his cheek bone was crushed and his spleen was lost.
“It’s going OK,” Peacock said Tuesday from his Livermore home. “It’s not where I’d like to be. Life throws you curves.”
No one knows why his Jeep veered over the centerline into the truck’s path that Oct. 2 in Turner. However, it wasn’t related to speed or alcohol, police previously said and Pastor Rick Messana reinforced on Tuesday.
“I don’t remember,” Peacock said of the accident. He and his wife, Trish, who suffered less-serious injuries, had been heading home from appointments in Auburn when the crash occurred.
The surgeries continue for Barry Peacock and medical and household expenses are mounting, Messana said..
“They need help,” said Messana, who is pastor of the North Livermore Baptist Church where Barry and his family attend services.
Community and church members are rallying around the family and have been making donations and volunteer time to help make repairs at the house. The local Cub Scouts and family members built an access ramp to the house.
Messana plans to cook up his authentic Italian spaghetti and meatballs to be served at a benefit supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Livermore Falls High School.
“Barry’s attitude is excellent,” Messana said, speaking as both his pastor and friend.
He’s repeatedly said, “Thank God I’m alive. I’m going to move forward, whatever it takes,” Messana added.
They’re a close and loving family, he said, which includes two children at home, Barry Ray, 18, and Chanel, 16, and an older daughter, Victoria, who lives in Auburn.
Barry Peacock had been out of work before the accident because of a degenerative back condition. Trish Peacock is unemployed, and the family is without transportation. The Jeep was totaled in the accident; another vehicle is in the shop for repairs, but the mechanic will need to be paid, Messana said. They’ll need a vehicle with an automatic transmission.
“The house the family lives in is in desperate need of care,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to raise some money to help them out.”
