AUBURN – Glendon M. Burgess, 65, of 29 Elmwood Road, Auburn, died Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Androscoggin Hospice House after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Lewiston on Aug. 20, 1942, the son of Lloyd and Mildred (Jacobs) Burgess. He was educated in Auburn schools and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from June 1960 to June 1967.

He was employed at Superior Concrete in Auburn before joining the Lewiston Evening Journal staff as a newsman in January 1969. He was transferred to the Journal Sports Department in 1975, and served in that capacity with the Lewiston papers until his passing.

He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed brook fishing and hunting deer with family members and friends. He provided the brook trout at the annual “fish fry” at his family members camps at Bear Pond in Hartford.

He also enjoyed the game of softball and organized the East Auburn Lakers softball team in 1969, serving as pitcher-manager. The team won many championships in the Auburn Recreation Softball League. In 1986, the Lakers captured the State Class A Modified Championship.

He is survived by his two children, Carol Burgess of Portland and Daniel Burgess and his wife, Lisa, of Waterville; four grandchildren, Devin and Drew Burgess and Alex and Taylor Carey; a brother, Arnold Burgess and his wife, Roberta, of Auburn; a sister, Sandy Oliver and her husband, Robert, of Lewiston; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Lloyd Jr.; and a sister, Betty Thayer.

The family would like to thank the Lewiston Sun Journal staff for Tuesday’s heartwarming article in the paper.
