LEWISTON – Naomi Mae (Dunton) Barker, 87, died peacefully Friday, Nov. 9, at St. Marguerite d’Youville Pavilion with her family by her side.
She was born in Hallowell on April 25, 1920, the daughter of Harold and Jessie Atkinson Dunton. She attended Gardiner schools and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1937.
On May 29, 1941, she married George Barker and moved to South Gardiner, where they lived for 11 years. In 1952, they moved to 18 Poland Road in Auburn, where she raised her family and worked for the city of Auburn as a school crossing guard.
She was an active member and participant in several activities at Court Street Baptist Church, most notably in her later years in the Young At Heart program, Missionary Circle and the Bible Study Group. She also volunteered at area charitable organizations, including the Salvation Army. Her hobbies included camping, baking cookies and spending time with her family.
A kind and loving woman, she will be remembered for her unswerving devotion to her family and to her faith.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, George Barker Sr. of Auburn; her five children, George Barker Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of Harpswell, Judith Foye of Freeport, Richard Barker of Cumberland, Jane Gosselin and her husband, Raymond, of Biddeford and Thomas Barker and his wife, Carol-Lynn, of Bedford, N.H.; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nicholas Barker, William, Robert and Brandon Foye, Scott and Justin Barker, Benjamin and Andrew Gosselin and Linsey Barker; two great-grandchildren, Abigail Gosselin and Gordon Foye; a sister, Georgia Bailey of North Berwick; a brother, Everett Dunton of Homosassa Springs, Fla.; sisters-in law, Hilda Barker of Freeport and Mary Tibbetts of Gardiner; an aunt, Louise Jewett of Alna; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Eleanor Brown, earlier this year.
