BANGOR (AP) – Some workers are upset over rules that prevent them from smoking not only on the Hollywood Slots construction site but on abutting property, as well.

The safety and health program was implemented last week in a joint effort by Penn National Gaming Inc. and construction company Cianbro Corp.

Under the program, fines can be assessed on workers for safety violations. Included in the rule is a $50 fine to be assessed for violating tobacco-free workplace rules, which extend to the public sidewalk as well as neighboring private property.

Company official Alan Burton acknowledges that some smokers are unhappy but he said Cianbro wants to be respectful of neighboring landowners.
