A Fryeburg man was wounded in a hunting-related incident in upstate New York late Saturday afternoon.
Lawrence Perry, 59, who lives on Bog Road, suffered a flesh wound to one of his legs from a shotgun slug, said Maureen Wren, a spokeswoman for New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation. Wren said the wound wasn’t life-threatening.
“It didn’t penetrate very deep,” she said.
The shooting happened between 5 and 6 p.m. – after hunting hours ended for the day, said Wren – near Pinnacle Road in Henrietta, N.Y. That’s in Monroe County, near Rochester.
It followed a run-in involving Perry and his hunting partner, Desi Alverez, with a group of ATV riders who were trespassing on land where Perry and Alverez were deer hunting, Wren said.
She also said another hunting party was in the area at the time.
Wren said the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has joined with DEC in investigating the incident because it’s unclear if the ATV riders or the other hunters may be responsible for the shooting.
It wasn’t clear who fired the shot that wounded the Mainer, she said.
Sheriffs taking part in the probe couldn’t be reached for comment Monday night.
No charges had been lodged as of Monday evening, Wren said.
Perry, formerly a registered Maine guide, was convicted of several hunting-related offenses in Maine in 2004 after game wardens charged him and several other people with violations in the Brownfield area during a Warden Service sting operation.
Perry was one of 13 hunters summonsed or arrested after that undercover operation, which took place in fall 2003 and involved a game warden posing as a hunter from Pennsylvania.
He was convicted on nine of 29 charges, but later appealed and saw several of the convictions overturned.
After the trial in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris, Perry said he was pleased to have had his day in court, and said that he’ll hunt elsewhere, a reference to losing his Maine hunting license.
“I grew up in the woods, and I’m a real hunter. They’ll never take that away from me,” he said then.
