AUBURN – The three new tenants at the Auburn Mall will miss Black Friday sales, but they still expect to open for holiday shopping.
Both Super Shoes and Joker’s are looking at a Nov. 30 opening. Steve & Barry’s, a national apparel store where everything is $20 or less, expects a mid-December opening. All three had hoped to be open by Thanksgiving. The day after the holiday, dubbed Black Friday, is typically the biggest shopping day of the year.
“Building a store is a lot like building a home,” said David Lee, mall manager. “Everything takes longer than planned.”
He added that all the new store managers want to be sure that everything is perfect before they open their doors.
“In Joker’s case, that means not just the games and activities, but the kitchen has to be 100 percent as well,” he said.
Joker’s Family Fun & Games will occupy three vacant mall spaces: the former Gap store, photo processing store and arcade. At 11,500-square-feet, the family activity center will be about half the size of the Portland location but offer 80 percent of its activities, said co-owner Jim Grattelo.
Steve & Barry’s, which will occupy 60,000 square feet in the former Porteous store, offers clothes, shoes, jewelry and accessories for men, women and children. It’s also the exclusive retailer for designer lines by actress Sarah Jessica Parker and NBA star Stephon Marbury.
Super Shoes is relocating from the former Dexter Shoe building on Center Street into a retrofitted, 13,000-square-foot space previously occupied by Express and two other smaller retailers. The move triples the floor space for the company’s inventory of footwear, uniforms and outdoor clothing.
