SOUTH PARIS – Hugh Hill, 89, of High Street, South Paris, passed away after four years at the Maine Veterans’ Home on Friday, Nov. 16.
He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on Jan. 10, 1918, to James and Catherine Truesdale Hill. In 1922, his family moved to Springvale, where he graduated from Sanford High School.
In 1938, he married Electa Estella Plummer of South Paris and started raising a family in Springvale, where he worked as a cost accountant for Goodall Textile Mill in Sanford. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, stationed in Okinawa, Japan in 1945.
In 1948, his family moved back to the Plummer Farm on High Street, where he was a farmer for many years. He also worked at Poland Spring Job Corp and retired from Penley’s Mill in West Paris.
He was a member of the Congregational Church, Penny Players (theatrical group), Masons, Grange, American Legion and was named the Hillsman Barber Shopper of the year in 1995. He was well-known for his wonderful singing voice and sang regularly at the Congregational Church and performed numerous solos throughout the community. He also enjoyed photography, gardening, hunting and fishing. Most of all, his greatest love was his family.
He is survived by his sister, Frances Libby of Alfred; two daughters, Karen Electa Spurgin and husband, Roy, of Desoto, Texas, and Myrna Hill Lamb and husband, Allen, of Bountiful, Utah; two sons, Frank Plummer Hill and wife, Daunna, of Rixford, Pa., and Brian Chase Hill and wife, Faye, of South Paris; 13 grandchildren, Travis, Becky, Lucille, Patience and Prudence, all of Texas, Jeremy, Dawson, Brandon and Brianna, all of Maine, Frank Jr. of California, Holly of New York, Amber of Colorado and Aaron of New Mexico; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Electa Estella Plummer Hill; brother, James Hill; and a great-grandchild, Clayton Spurgin.
