KINGFIELD – A $750,000 federal grant will pay for a new well and help replace some water pipes for the town, it was announced Tuesday.
The funding will be used to expand the water system and create a loop between the Poland Spring Water Co. bottling facility and the town’s water district, Administrative Assistant Greg Davis said Wednesday.
Expansion of the water system was part of the deal to support Poland Spring.
The water main upgrades on routes 27 and 142 go out to the Poland Spring property and will provide water for the plant facility, he said.
The U.S. Economic Development Administration provided the grant, and the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments will serve as administrator for the town.
In addition to upgrades on routes 142 and 27, sections of pipe on Salem and High streets will be replaced, said Kingfield Water Superintendent Alan Stewart. The work will also eliminate two dead ends where water is piped to the end of a road and stops, he said.
That situation is not good news, he added, as the water system needs to be set up so that water circulates.
A 12-inch production well is also included in the plans.
The well, that will be used on and off as a backup well, is expected to be able to pump at least 350 gallons per minute or more, Stewart said. Goodwin Well and Water Inc. has been hired to put in the well.
Some work has already started, he said, but the road work will be completed in the spring. A bid for the work has been awarded to E.L. Vining from Farmington.
