Farmington – Placide A. Couture, 80, a resident of Franklin Road, Jay, died early Friday morning, Nov. 23, surrounded by his family at Sandy River Center for Health Care in Farmington, where he had been a patient for the past two days.
He was born April 12, 1927, in Jay, the son of Rosaire and Anais (Shink) Couture. He attended school in the Jay School System. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On Dec. 1, 1951, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay, he married Bertha Jeannette Hines of Turner.
Placide worked for International Paper Co. at the Otis Mill in Jay as a millwright. He owned and operated Maple Valley Farm on Franklin Road in Jay where he raised broiler chickens, had apple orchards and made maple syrup, having annual tours showing how they made maple syrup. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church, a member of the Quarter Century Club at International Paper, 3rd and 4th degree of Knights of Columbus and also V.F.W. Frank L. Mitchell Post 3335. He was a jack-of-all-trades and he was always busy doing something. Placide was a wonderful and devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Jeannette of Jay; five sons, Arnold Couture of Chesterville, Jay Couture and his wife, Jo, of Jay, Tony Couture and his wife, Irene, also of Jay, Barry Couture and his wife, Lisette, of Fayette and Peter Couture and his wife, Stephanie, of Farmington; and his daughter, Mary Howes and her husband, Tim DeMillo, of Jay; 12 grandchildren; three brothers, Anthanase Couture and Aurelien Couture of Jay, and Gilles Couture of Livermore Falls; seven sisters, Marguerite Slovak of Livermore Falls, Blanche M. Bilodeau of Jay, Sister Mary Martha Couture of Hudson, N.H., Muriel Desjardins and Georgette Sutton of Biddeford, Grace Hodge of Old Orchard and Patricia Couture of Jay.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Toussainte and Emmanuel Couture; two sisters, Cecile Dupont and Carmel Garneau; and son-in-law, Normand Howes.
