PARIS – The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Tent 8, Paris, Tent 17, Bryant Pond, and Tent 19, Stoneham, will fill approximately 500 Christmas stockings to send to the Maine Army National Guard and other Maine troops serving overseas.

Gifts can be dropped at L.F. Pike and Son and Mrs. Jones’ computer classroom at Fryeburg Academy before Saturday, Dec. 1.

Society meeting

OXFORD – The Oxford Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at the Kay House.

There will be a short business meeting and all members will work on the museum (house and barn) to prepare for a holiday open house on Saturday, Dec. 8. Refreshments will be served.

Attend FFA event

INDIANAPOLIS – The Oxford Hills Technical School Future Farmers of America Chapter team was among 40 participating in the 2007 National FFA Forestry Career Development Event Oct. 24 to 27 during the 80th National FFA Convention.

Team members were Joseph Adams, Dustin Flanders, Tim Johnson and Devon Smith along with their FFA adviser, Al Schaeffer.

Participants in the event were asked to answer questions on tree and equipment identification, take a general knowledge exam and complete interactive forestry applications.

The event is a special project of the National FFA Foundation that uses competition to connect classroom learning and careers.

FFA is a national youth organization preparing student members for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture.

Food course

RUMFORD – A Serve Safe Food handling course will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, Dec. 3 to 7, at the River Valley Technology Center, 60 Lowell St.

The test will be administered at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.

The presenter will be Frank Maccarrone, culinary arts program manager in the Oxford Hills School District.

The cost is $175 a person and includes the text, exam, 10 hours of instruction and unlimited phone and e-mail inquiries.
