PARIS – After two months of service, an interim assessor appointed by the town has resigned.
Selectmen unanimously accepted the resignation of Carole Kelley of Windham on Monday after thanking her for her services.
Town Manager Sharon Jackson said Kelley’s resignation is effective Nov. 29, the day before she leaves to spend the winter in Florida.
At the meeting, Kelley advised the town to hire a full-time replacement for at least one year.
“Definitely right now you need a full-time assessor,” Kelley said. “There’s a lot of work to be done before your next commitment date.”
Kelley said she believed some areas of the town had been assessed incorrectly, and that a new assessor would need to research which areas were assessed too high or too low.
Jackson said a new assessor will also have to address work that Kelley was not able to get to while working for the town in a part-time capacity.
Kelley, who has 13 years of assessing experience, began working for the town in September, replacing former assessor Kevin McGillicuddy. After a revaluation that raised the town’s value by $83 million and led to complaints of increased property taxes, McGillicuddy resigned.
He had said the revaluation would restore the town’s sales ratio and allow residents to collect full exemptions.
Kelley’s commitment was initially to last until April, with a part-time assessor’s agent serving the town while she was away in the winter.
Jackson said Tuesday that five or six people have applied for the assessor’s position, and that a new hire will likely be announced at the next selectmen’s meeting Dec. 10.
