CARIBOU (AP) – The crash of a sport utility vehicle into a garbage truck on a slush-covered road in Caribou has left two men dead.

The victims were identified as 30-year-old Daniel Andretta of Caribou, who was driving the SUV, and 46-year-old Ricky Fortin, who was emptying refuse into the truck while it was in the breakdown lane on the Van Buren Road.

Police said Andretta apparently lost control of the SUV, which skidded sideways and pinned Fortin between the two vehicles. The driver of the garbage truck was not injured.

The accident took place Tuesday morning as a storm swept through Aroostook County, dumping more than 7 inches of snow on portions of the St. John Valley.
