AUGUSTA – Deon Cheers nailed a 3-pointer with under a minute left in regulation as the University of Maine at Augusta rallied to claim a 73-70 victory over Central Maine Community College on Wednesday.
The Mustangs (5-5) held a 43-35 advantage at the break, but UMA saved a little offensive boost for the late going.
Tyler Norris led the way for UMA with 16 points, while Cheers tallied 15 and Chad Gray added 14. Central Maine was paced by Dave Labonte with a game-high 21 points, while Tyler Smithgall drained 20, and Steve Cyr added 11.
UMF 64, Thomas 52
FARMINGTON – Matt St. John hit a pair of 3-pointers down the stretch during an 18-8 run during the final six minutes to lift Maine-Farmington to a 64-52 victory over Thomas.
St. John finished with 16 points, while Josh Tanguay added 13 points and nine rebounds for UMF (3-1). Andrew Duncanson led Thomas (2-2) with 15 points and six steals.
Women’s basketball
CMCC 97, UMA 30
AUGUSTA – Tiffany Seams poured 20 points and dished off 13 assists to lead Central Maine Community College to a 97-30 rout over the University of Maine at Augusta in women’s basketball action Wednesday. Brittany Salley chipped in for the Mustangs (4-2) with 16 points in a well-balanced attack. Katie Martin put 13 points on the board, while Kerri Harris added 12 and Tiffany Gurney tallied 11. Tanya Cole registered double digits for the first time with 10 points to her credit.
UMF 69, Thomas 58
FARMINGTON – Caitlyn Laflin scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Maine-Farmington handed Thomas its first loss of the season in a 69-58 contest. Leading 37-29 at the half, UMF saw its advantage shrink to two points with 7:25 left before the Beavers pulled away for the victory.
Erin Johnson added 12 points and Amanda Byrne had 10 for UMF (2-1).
Hockey
Holderness 7, Hebron 4
HEBRON – Adam Mezzagno and Marc Antoniou netted two goals apiece to lead Holderness to a 7-4 victory over Hebron in prep school hockey action Wednesday. David Woods led Hebron (0-1) with two goals, while Andrew Cetola and Keith Buzzar also tallied.
