The calendar only reads November, but University of Maine at Farmington men’s basketball standout Sean Fry already is accumulating a locker full of weekly awards.
Fry, a 6-foot-4 senior forward from Jay, received a double dose of hoop recognition earlier this week. He was named Player of the Week by both the North Atlantic Conference and the Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches and Writers Association.
While it usually takes two or three top-notch efforts to haul in such honors, Fry needed only one game to bring home the hardware for Farmington. Fry racked up 26 points and 10 rebounds, sinking a pair of 3-pointers and draining 8 of his 10 tries from the free-throw line, leading the Beavers to a victory over in-state, non-conference rival Saint Joseph’s College.
UMF (2-1) ascended the No. 5 in the MMBCWA team rankings with the victory, supplanting the Monks.
Tri-captain Fry currently ranks in the top 10 among Maine Division III players in three major offensive categories: scoring (second, 18.3 points per game), rebounding (first, 9.67 per game) and free-throw proficiency (eighth, 86.7 percent).
His quick start follows a strong junior campaign, when Fry averaged 14.7 points and 7.8 rebounds and hit at a 36 percent clip beyond the 3-point arc on his way to NAC second-team laurels.
Fry leads a flurry of local players on a deep UMF roster, which graduated only one senior from the 2006-07 squad.
Matt St. John of Wayne (Maranacook), also a captain, has knocked down a team-high five 3-pointers through the first three games.
Lewiston senior Tom Labrie, a 6-8 center, is the Beavers’ No. 3 rebounder at 3.7 per contest, complementing Ted Neil of Strong (Mt. Blue) in a rugged frontcourt.
Two first-year players have made an immediate impact, as well. Mike Gingras of Winthrop scored five points in his first career appearance, while Manchester native and Maranacook grad Kevin Leary ranks fourth on the team in scoring after his first two stints.
Numbers game
Fry isn’t the only go-to player providing a local flavor to the men’s Division III in-state leader board.
Senior Isaac Stickney of Rumford has etched his name in the top 10 in two columns. The 6-6 pivot man has amassed 14.3 points per game while connecting at a tidy 63.6 percent from the field.
Freshman Isaiah Braithwaite of Farmington (Mt. Blue) is off to a torrid start for his new team at Thomas College. A consistent 3-point threat in high school, Braithwaite has drained over 70 percent of his bids from the floor while dishing out 3.3 assists per night.
Rangeley product Neil Stewart christened his senior campaign at Maine Maritime Academy with a flourish. Stewart ranks second in the state with eight rebounds per game. He also scored a team-high 14 points in the Mariners’ 82-44 win Tuesday night over Unity College.
Huskies’ hot hands
Two players with championship-winning ties to Twin Cities high school hockey have the University of Southern Maine men’s squad off to a flying start.
Kyle Smith (Edward Little) and Jamie Gilbert (St. Dom’s) are enjoying a four-game unbeaten streak out of the blocks for the Huskies, who are deadlocked with Bowdoin for 14th in the USCHO.com Division III national poll.
Smith, a junior, logged his second career hat trick and scored every USM goal in a 3-1 win over Salve Regina in the semifinals of the Skidmore College Invitational. All three of Smith’s strikes came on the power play.
The tri-captain leads Southern Maine with six points in four games.
Gilbert took center stage in the Skidmore final, making 16 saves in a 4-1 triumph over Cortland State.
After posting a shutout in his only previous appearance, Gilbert, a transfer from Division I UMass-Amherst, sports a sterling .971 save percentage. He shares the Huskies’ goaltending duties with Ryan Sullivan.
Both local players contributed to a pair of Class A championships during their careers in Lewiston-Auburn.
