ORONO, Maine (AP) – Junior Bernal scored 19 points and led Maine to a 86-58 victory over winless New Jersey Tech on Saturday.

Bernal scored the game’s first basket, and the Black Bears (4-4) never trailed. They opened a 25-10 lead, and increased it to 39-20 by intermission as the Highlanders (0-8) had 14 of their 24 turnovers. A 13-2 run in the second half put the game away.

Maine shot 52 percent from the field while New Jersey Tech managed only 28 percent.

Jason Hight added 12 points for Maine and Brian Andre had 11.

Nesho Milosevic led the Highlanders with 18 points and 16 rebounds.

Wentworth 54, UNE 51

BIDDEFORD – Junior Brad Bryant of Livermore tallied 14 points and six rebounds to lead Wentworth to a 54-51 victory over the University of New England in men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 48-46 with 4:14 to play, the Leopards (3-1) went on an 8-0 run. Matt Abbott and Sherrad Prezzie-Blue made 3-of-4 free throws, while Bryant scored from inside with 1:54 left to push the Wentworth lead to 51-48.

Junior Johnnie Jefferson paced the Nor’easters (2-4) with a team-high 14 points and collared seven rebounds in the losing effort.

Keene State 106, Southern Maine 83

KEENE, N.H. – Senior guard Matt Hickey led a balanced scoring attack for Keene State with 17 points as the Owls swooped down on the University of Southern Maine with a 106-83 win in men’s basketball action Saturday.

The Owls (5-0) jumped out to a commanding 62-37 halftime lead with a blistering 52.5 shooting percentage from the field. Junior forward Tyler Kathan added 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Senior forward Drew Coppenrath led all scorers with a career-high 28 points for the Huskies (2-3) on 12-for-21 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range in the losing effort.

Thomas 85, CSJ 80

WATERVILLE – Michael Burchill came off the bench to lead all scorers with 25 points as Thomas College held on for an 85-80 triumph over the College of St. Joseph in men’s basketball action Saturday.

Andrew Duncanson contributed 23 points for the Terriers (3-3) and was tied with teammate Darrell Alexander for the team lead in rebounds with six.

A late rally fell short as St. Joseph was led by Tyler Herrington with 22 points and nine rebounds.

Colby 113, Elms 109 (OT)

FARMINGTON – Mark Gaudet poured in a collegiate-high 37 points, including the final six points of regulation, to lift Colby College to a 113-109 overtime victory over Elms College in men’s basketball action Saturday.

With the Blazers (4-1) up 91-85, Gaudet nailed a 3-point shot with 1:17 left to cut the lead to three. Gaudet got fouled shooting another 3-point attempt with 33 seconds left and calmly secured all three free throws to tie the game at 91-91.

The Mules (4-0) scored the first eight points of overtime, but the Blazers battled back to 99-97 with 2:27 remaining in the extra frame. The Mules again responded as first-year forward Michel Russell got a lay-up and then Gaudet executed a 3-point shot with 1:34 left for a 104-97 lead.

UMaine-Farmington 89, Fisher 62

FARMINGTON – Sean Fry of Jay had team-highs of 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to an 89-60 win over Fisher College in the first day of the Colby College Invitational on Saturday.

Matt St. John nailed five 3-point shots on the way to 17 points for the Beavers (4-1). Eric Lelansky was perfect from the field at 5-for-5, including three treys to finish with 13 points.

Louis Williams led all scorers with 31 points, including five 3-point shots, for Fisher in the loss.

Men’s ice hockey

Southern Maine 3, Middlebury 1

MIDDELBURY, Vt. – Junior goalie Jamie Gilbert of Lewiston stopped 30-of-31 shots to help the University of Southern Maine defeat Middlebury 3-1 in NESCAC men’s hockey action Saturday.

The Huskies (5-0-1) broke a scoreless deadlock at 6:33 of the second period when junior Kyle Smith of Auburn converted a pass from senior Mike Stevens for a power-play goal. Smith picked up his second goal of the game 11 minutes later when he fired home a rebound.

Gilbert lost his bid for a shutout with 2:28 remaining as senior Samuel Driver collected the only Panther (3-2-1) tally of the game.

Colby 6, Castleton 3

WATERVILLE – Sophoore forward Michael Belliveau and T.J. Kelley scored two goals apiece as Colby skated to a 6-3 victory over Castleton State in men’s ice hockey action Saturday.

The Mules (3-2) took a 4-1 lead after two periods when first-year forward Billy Crinnion notched his first collegiate goal.

Matthew Link cut the Colby lead to 5-3 with a goal at 11:28 for the Spartans (1-4-1), but the Mules held off the charge and got an empty net goal from Mike Butler to secure the win.

Bowdoin 10, Skidmore 5

BRUNSWICK – First-year Ryan Leary broke the Bowdoin school record with six goals, leading the Polar Bears to a 10-5 victory over Skidmore in men’s ice hockey action Saturday.

Mike Westerman scored a pair of goals for the Polar Bears (4-1) and added three assists. Ryan Blossom had four assists while goaltender Crhis Rossi collected nin saves.

The Thoroughbreds (1-3-2) were paced by Joe Forstbauer, who had two goals in the losing effort.

Women’s basketball

Univ. New England 57, Thomas 45

WATERVILLE – Marissa Hesketh led the Nor’easters with 24 points and seven rebounds as the University of New England coasted to a 57-45 win over Thomas College in women’s basketball action Saturday.

Katie Diggins pitched in with a double-double for the Nor’easters (3-3) with 11 points and 19 rebounds.

The Terriers (2-2) were lead by Karen Demers with nine pionts, three rebounds and three steals, while Cortney Barrett chipped in with eight points, five rebounds and three blocks in the losing effort.

Southern Maine 71, Keene State 66

KEENE, N.H. – Junior forward Stacey Kent notched a double-double with 16 pionts and a career-high 13 rebounds to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 71-66 come-from-behind victory over Keene State in women’s basketball action Saturday.

Rallying from a 37-28 deficit at the break, the Huskies (5-0) outscored the Owls (2-2) 43-29 in the second half. Kent notched 12 of her points, while senior forward Shannon Kynoch scored eight and freshman guard Kaylie DeMillo of Jay scored all eight of her points from the free throw line.

Green Mountain 51, St. Joseph’s 48

STANDISH – Millicent Hopper and Christina Chamberlin scored a shared team-high 17 points each to lead Green Mountain’s balanced attack for a 51-48 triumph over St. Joseph’s in women’s basketball action Saturday.

Carolyn Freeman provided most of the Monk’s (4-2) offense with a game-high 20 points. Freeman tossed a total of seven field goals, six from beyond the arc.

Emmanuel 72, Bowdoin 68

BRUNSWICK – Emmanuel College exploded for 12 early points as the Saints managed to pick up their first-ever victory over Bowdoin with a 72-68 decision in women’s basketball action Saturday.

The Saints (4-2) expanded a 11-point halftime lead in the opening minutes of the second half following a jumper by Maura Mooney.

The resilient Polar Bears (3-3) chipped away at the Emmanuel lead, cutting the advantage to seven points when Jill Anelauskas nailed a 3-pointer with 6:29 remaining.

Bowdoin further whittled down the lead on a 9-0 surge that made it a three-point game, 67-64, on a pair of Alexa Kaubris free-throws. The Polar Bears got as close as one point following another pair of freebies for Kaubris, but she later missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer as Emmanuel clung to victory.

Massacoit 77, CMCC 74

BROCKTON, Mass. – Chrissy Stellae drained a 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining to give Massacoit the 77-74 win over the Central Maine Community College in women’s basketball action Saturday.

The Mustangs (4-3) engaged in a balanced attack for a 40-35 halftime lead. Tiffany Seams recorded a team-high 21 points for the Mustangs, while Brittany Salley (17), Katie Martin (15) and Amanda Webb (11) found their respecitve grooves.

Massacoit (4-3) stepped up the pace in the second frame as Joneiha Veiga rattled off a game-high 31 points in the winning effort.
