OTTAWA (AP) – Brendan Shanahan made sure the New York Rangers took advantage of the struggling Ottawa Senators.
Shanahan scored two goals and the New York Rangers beat the Ottawa Senators 5-2 Saturday, handing the Eastern Conference champions their sixth straight loss.
With the win, the Rangers moved a game behind Ottawa for the conference lead.
Sabres 8, Hurricanes 1
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Ales Kotalik had two goals, and Jaroslav Spacek had a goal and two assists to lift the Buffalo Sabres over the struggling Carolina Hurricanes, 8-1, Saturday night.
Tim Connolly, Derek Roy and Maxim Afinogenov had a goal and assist each, and Adam Mair and Thomas Vanek also scored for the Sabres, who have won six of their last seven.
Stars 4, Flyers 1
PHILADELPHIA – Jussi Jokinen, Antti Miettinen, and Mike Ribeiro scored second-period goals to lead the Dallas Stars over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night.
Jeff Halpern also scored, and Trevor Daley and Brenden Morrow each had two assists for the Pacific Division leaders, who played tenacious defense in snapping a two-game losing streak.
Marty Turco had 17 saves for Dallas, which played its sixth game in nine days. The Stars had won six straight before losing at New Jersey and Pittsburgh.
Randy Jones scored for the Flyers, who had won two of three – beating division leaders Carolina and Ottawa. Marty Biron stopped 26 shots.
Red Wings 3, Coyotes 2
DETROIT – Dan Cleary’s power-play goal completed Detroit’s third-period comeback, and Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist to lift the Red Wings to a victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night.
Pavel Datsyuk also scored for NHL-leading Detroit, and Brian Rafalski had two assists. Chris Osgood made 24 saves.
Daniel Winnik, and Fredrik Sjostrom scored for Phoenix, and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 36 shots.
Zetterberg tied it 2-2 just 39 seconds into the third period when he chipped in a loose puck from a goal-mouth scramble for his 17th goal.
Capitals 2, Panthers 1
SUNRISE, Fla. – Alexander Ovechkin scored the go-ahead goal from a severe angle, Brent Johnson stopped 24 shots and Washington snapped a three-game skid with 2-1 victory over the Florida Panthers on Saturday night.
Brian Pothier also scored for Washington, which lost its first three games against Florida this season by a total of three goals.
Branislav Mezei scored for Florida, which lost its second straight – both at home – following a season-high four-game winning streak. Tomas Vokoun stopped 41 shots but gave up two soft goals. He was 5-1 in his previous six games.
Ovechkin’s 20th goal gave Washington a 2-1 lead at 4:38 of the third period. Ovechkin stood parallel to the Florida net, about halfway between the left corner and the goal. He sent the puck toward the front of the net, and the puck hit Vokoun before going into the goal.
