PORTLAND (AP) – A landmark restaurant in Portland has hung up its ladle after 71 years in business.

The Village Cafe served its last meal on Saturday as regular customers and longtime workers said their goodbyes.

Vincenzo and Maria Reali opened the business in 1936 as a neighborhood tavern, serving up spaghetti and Vincenzo’s homemade wine. The building will be demolished to make way for a condominium complex.

Owner John Reali said he’ll take the winter off before deciding whether to open another restaurant.
