BUCKFIELD – After some discussion, selectmen gave approval to the Recreation Committee to put an ice rink on the green in front of the Municipal Building.

The 48-by-60-foot rink will start 10 feet in front of the flag pole and extend to 10 feet from the new lighted gazebo. Selectmen preferred that site rather than the football field where there is no lighting. The lights stay on at the Municipal Building grounds until 9 p.m.

“I don’t want to see any town employee tending this rink,” Selectman Oscar Gammon emphatically said.

Selectman Chris Haywood said the committee should get volunteers. Selectmen also agreed that there should be some hours for use and rules established.

Town Manager Glen Holmes said he would pass the board’s requests on to the Recreation Committee.

In other matters, Margot Siekman was appointed to serve on the Ordinance Development Committee, and Everett Tilton was appointed to the Church on the Hill Committee.

Holmes announced that the town’s new fire truck had been delivered and has already been in a parade and answered two calls.

Holmes updated selectmen on the status of the SAD 39 merger. He said the school board would decide this week if it wants to join with SADs 21 and 43 on the possibility of a merger.

Selectmen voted to approve the Town Office closing on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Holmes read the November report on the Swap Shop at the transfer station. The shop recycled more than 221 items, keeping more than a ton of materials from the waste stream. Items are free to people who can use them, but a box is available for donations.
