It’s no mystery why the lunch ladies at Leavitt Area High School have enough stamina to provide hundreds of kids with meals each day; the get their morning workout by pumping up the jams in the school cafeteria.
“It’s hard to concentrate on writing my college application essays,” laughs Heather Heackbert, senior, “when all I can hear is C&C Music Factory’s ‘Everybody Dance Now.”
“It makes me want to get up out of my chair and start groovin!” adds Sean Stultz, also a senior.
It started last year when the ladies obtained a copy of an old Jock Jams Vol. 1 cassette tape. The catchy beats that once captured us as elementary school children have now followed us up into our later years in high school.
But what happens when students hear the music through the thick wooden doors that separate the kitchen? To some students, they love it; others find it strange. Danielle Cleere, sophomore, speaks of the situation, “It’s an unusual genre to listen to in the cafeteria.
Upon interviewing the ladies, they laughed when asked about it “We listen to everything, we love it all. It seems to boost our morale and sometimes, the music is what keeps us going ,” said Marie Jordon, lunch lady.
Overall, most students agree that their choice of music is harmless and even amusing, but junior Paige Barker says it best, “It’s cool if that’s what keeps them motivated. As long as the music doesn’t bother other people, it doesn’t bother me!”
