The St. Dom’s fall athletics teams are walking away with another state championship, the second this season! The Boy’s Varsity Soccer Team defeated the Hampden Academy Owls 2-0 on Monday, November 5th at Hampden Academy.
Recently coming out of a three game losing streak, the state title was all but a sure thing for this team. At a meeting before the playoffs, the team discussed how they were relying solely on talent and not the heart and desire to win. “We knew we needed to do that for playoffs,” said junior Casey Parker, “and everyone on the field gave it 100% all the time.” Parker scored the second goal in the final game, debilitating Hampden for the rest of the game.
“We worked well together all year,” said junior Matt Barlion, “and scoring a goal or winning a game was never a one man thing. It took the whole team and the team’s drive to win the title.” Barlion, the teams leading scorer, was unable to play during the Western Maine Conference Game against NYA. The team’s victory against NYA proved that winning was more than individual talents but a merging of everyone’s talents into a cohesive unit, which is exactly what they did.
With only three starting seniors leaving next year, the young varsity team is sure to grow and play just as well next fall. As the boys continue to unite and grow together, they will most definitely prove to be competition for next year.
