FAIRFIELD (AP) – Police and fire officials say a body was found inside a house in Fairfield that was destroyed by fire.

A dispatcher at the Somerset County regional communications center in Skowhegan said the fire was called in at about 4:45 p.m. Friday.

Fairfield Fire Chief Duane Bickford said the discovery of the body was confirmed but that the identity had not been determined.

According to the Central Maine Morning Sentinel, Bickford said the house was engulfed in flames with the roof collapsed by the time crews arrived.

The fire happened on Route 104 near the town line with Waterville.
